Driving holidays are back in 2022 and one look at these destinations will have you itching to hit the road.
Known better by locals as Route 1, the iconic Ring Road encircles the entire country, taking in everything from geothermal pools and vivid blue fjords to black-sand beaches and volcanic craters.
RING ROAD, ICELAND 
You could complete the 1338km road in about 16 hours in theory. But realistically, the wealth of geological wonders and stunning sights require at least a week.
Most drivers begin the 56km journey from Salerno and stop off along the way at some of the postcard-perfect towns, the most famous of which include Amalfi, Positano and Ravello.
AMALFI DRIVE, ITALY
Crammed with hairpin bends, the road offers vertiginous views of the sea below and the mountains above, alongside plenty of pastel-hued medieval villages and turquoise water.
With stunning views over 37 mountains including Austria’s highest peak, Grossglockner, you can see why locals call this the most beautiful road in the world.
HIGH ALPINE RD, AUSTRIA
The road’s 48km and 36 hairpin bends enthral thrillseekers and terrify the faint-hearted in equal measure. For a small toll, anyone can go for a spin, when the weather permits.
Running from Chicago to Santa Monica, this famous road is the source of countless coming-of-age movies and has become the driving force (get it?) behind countless fantasy road trips.
ROUTE 66, USA
Although no longer in existence, you can still follow the old route using the modern Interstate Highway System. For ultimate kicks, hire a convertible and let loose Thelma and Louise style.
A drive through the mountains of New Zealand’s South Island, from Te Anau towards Milford Sound into Fiordland National Park, is one of the most scenic road trips you can do on four wheels.
