After two long years, the Covid-19 pandemic has eased in much of the world as people return to a pre-lockdown way of life.
But experts in the US and UK have warned that in its place, a series of viruses, from the “super flu” to tuberculosis and monkeypox, have emerged.
Take monkeypox, a rare, viral infection typically found in Central and West Africa that has baffled health experts after emerging in 29 non-endemic countries, including Australia.
Or the flu, where in Australia, the number of confirmed cases per week has exceeded the five-year average.
Why does the flu feel worse than ever? Although Covid-19 restrictions has helped reduce our exposure to other respiratory infections, we’ve lost natural immunity.
We’ve also dropped our flu vaccination uptake, making many more people vulnerable to catching the flu and or other illnesses, and feeling more severe symptoms than before.
Now that these diseases are circulating, Prof Bennett says enacting preventive measures like hand-washing and mask wearing is important.
