STORY: Sara Mulcahy

Queensland is celebrated for its myriad of Great Barrier Reef islands. But have you heard of the Frankland Islands?

These islands are up there with the best. Despite being only 30km from daytrip favourite Fitzroy Island, it is one of the least-visited island groups in the region.

Set in the pristine waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park off Deeral, the Franklands comprise five islands, Normanby, High, Russell, Round and Mabel.

Start in the tiny town of Deeral and sail with Frankland Island Reef Cruises down the Mulgrave River, followed by a 30-minute journey to Normanby.

How to get there

Go for the snorkelling. You can swim straight onto the reef from the beach. The 200 different species of corals are among the healthiest on the reef.

What to do

Bush camping permits are available and Frankland Island River Cruises can drop you off.

Where to stay

There are ensuite villas at the nearby Fishery Falls Holiday Park just out of Deera. Or you can stay at Babinda Quarters.

Babinda is home to a stunning freshwater swimming spots. Or go to Gordonvale to see Walsh's Pyramid, the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world.
