How top cop caught Australia's most wanted fugitive

In 2011, Naden had been on the run seven years when York, serving as Northern Region Commander, was told he had shot an officer near Nowendoc, on the NSW Northern Tableands.

At the time, Naden was Australia's most wanted man. York headed a taskforce dedicated to bringing the fugitive in, but he proved a hard target to track.

York said Naden used the bush survival skills honed from years on the run to stay out of the police dragnet.

CARLENE YORK

It was quite a difficult case because we had lots of evidence of where he had been, and he used to travel between Nowendoc and Gloucester up towards Port Macquarie, depending on the season.

But the taskforce’s work eventually paid off. After rigging hidden cameras in the bush, police tracked Naden to a holiday house near Gloucester in the Upper Hunter.

Police moved in to arrest the fugitive in a night operation on March 12, 2012. York said multiple factors made it a risky mission.

CARLENE YORK

The risk was Malcolm Naden might shoot one of my officers, Malcolm Naden might get shot himself, or there might be some accident (with) the police because of the nature of the ground they were searching.

After a brief struggle, Naden was taken into custody with a shot fired. York recalled the moment she was told in an early morning phone call the wanted man had been caught.

CARLENE YORK

I was very excited. Thrilled that we had got him. Very happy for the community… but also satisfied that our investigative techniques that we were using worked.

Naden was later sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to multiple serious offences, including two counts of murder and the attempted murder of a police officer.
