How ghost hunters investigate the supernatural

When strange and spooky phenomena are happening in your home, who you gonna call?

This is how Victorian ghost hunters investigate the paranormal.

Steve Ford and the Geelong- based Australian Ghost Investigators combine logic with psychic testing and hi-tech equipment to get to the bottom of spooks and spine-tinglers.

For Steve, paranormal investigation is a balance of cataloguing strange experiences while also looking for non-supernatural explanations.

Steve wasn't always a believer in the supernatural, but one experience swayed him. It happened during a psychic session at the historic Barwon Park Mansion in Winchelsea.

Sceptic to believer

They had been told stories about the ghost of a young girl who sometimes appeared in a certain room, which contained a neatly made up bed.

During the session, a psychic indicated a young girl was present in the room with the group and was also jumping on the bed.

Steve was doubtful, but at the end of the session the group found footprints of a small child indented on the top of the bed, where previously there had been none.

I had no explanation for that. It was certainly a turning point for me. I left Barwon Park Mansion feeling physically sick — I just couldn’t explain it.

When a team of spirit hunters is called to a house, the first move is to eliminate as many logical explanations for the phenomenon as possible.

Is it really a ghost?

That means checking for wind draughts if the resident has been feeling an unexplained gush of cold air, or making sure the electrical wiring is in order if lights are flashing.

We check how much power is flowing into the house. We check every powerpoint and make sure every possibility of an electrical abnormality is crossed off.

Investigators also use atmospheric monitoring gear to show up any anomalies in the suspected haunted area. This often involves electromagnetic field testing.

Going hi-tech

If the EMF sensor detects something and there's no electrical connection or other external energy source nearby, it could be related to ghost activity.

But, as Steve explains, even then such readings aren't concrete proof there is a ghost in the vicinity.

When you get rid of every other possibility, the EMF device can give you data that can’t be explained. But that’s just it — it’s not proof of something supernatural.
