How to vote when you've got Covid

Producer & Words: Simone Kealy

While most Australians will cast their vote in-person on Saturday May 21, what do you do if you have Covid-19 on election day?

On February 17, the government passed a bill to amend the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 to allow for people with Covid to vote via telephone.

What are the options?

To be eligible you must have had Covid some time during the three days leading up to the May 21 poll.

If you already have Covid before May 18, you can also apply for a postal vote, but only up until the Wednesday before election day.

What if you catch Covid before this date?

Close contacts and others self-isolating are eligible to vote over the phone, but the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) wants this changed so they can go to the polls in person.

What if you  are a close contact?

If you’re worried about catching Covid on election day but right now you’re a specimen of perfect health, you can also vote before May 21 at an early voting centre.

To vote over the phone, you first need to register by calling 1800 913 993. You’ll be asked questions to check your details on the electoral roll, and to choose a PIN.

If you have Covid-19

Call 1800 913 993 again and you’ll be asked for your registration and PIN rather than your personal details so that your vote remains secret.

Make the call

Your vote will be recorded by an AEC voting assistant, whilst a second assistant will check that you’ve voted as you intended.

When you’ve finished voting, the assistant will put your ballot paper into a secure ballot box. Then you can enjoy a homemade democracy sausage!
