Federal Election 2022: How to vote early

The Australian Electoral Commission is warning voters to expect longer waits at polling booths due to Covid precautions including regular cleaning, meaning many people may want to vote early. Here's what you need to know

If you can’t get to a polling place on election day, you can vote at an early voting centre in Australia. 

What are my options?

Early voting centres open on Monday May 9. A full list of locations for early voting booths is available on the AEC website or

If you’re overseas during the election period, you may be able to vote at an overseas voting centre or by post.For more information

What if I’m overseas?

Phone-in voting has traditionally been used by people who are blind, have low vision or are working in Antarctica. These people can vote early over the phone for the entire early voting period.

Can I vote early by phone?

This year legislation has been changed so that those with Covid can also use this service as an “emergency provision”.

Anyone who is Covid positive in the three days leading up to election day will be able to register for phone-in voting, if state regulations require them to isolate. 

Covid positive individuals can vote early on May 18, 19 or 20More details will be released ahead of the election day. Call 1800 913 993 to register or 13 23 26 for questions. 

If you are diagnosed earlier, authorities recommend you register for postal voting.

AEC mobile polling teams visit many voters who are not able to get to a polling place during the early voting period.

Can I vote early at a mobile polling facility?

Mobile polling facilities are set up in some hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and remote areas for people who can’t get to a polling place.For more information
