Under the radar spots fit for European summer

If there was ever a time to beat inflation and crowds in Europe this summer, it appears in the form of a low-key alternative to the usual hot spots. Steer off the over-beaten path and toward these under-hyped destinations.

The Brittany Coast, France

If you want to feel like you’ve reached Europe’s very edge, look no further. The islands in northwest France are hardly a secret, but they are plentiful and well spread out—and very scenic.

Marettimo, Italy

Marettimo offers no large beaches, but for a fee, locals will take you to a secluded cove, only accessible by boat. Pastimes include snorkelling and boating around turquoise grottoes.

Ferrara, Italy

To stroll through Ferrara is to step back in time. Visit the Renaissance sites and don’t leave without trying Cappellacci di zucca (pumpkin-filled ravioli), a regional specialty.

Canal du Midi, France

Barge down the canal and along the way tour vineyards, bike along the paths or visit mediaeval villages, prime among them the fortified town of Carcassonne.

Galicia, Spain

Galicia’s coastline is marked by rock formations and secluded beaches. Come at low tide to pass under the natural stone arches on the beach or high tide to watch the waves crash against the rocks.

Lille, France

A food lover's haven, and a blend between French and Flemish culture. Expect moules-frites (steamed mussels and french fries), waffles and beer on arrival.

Cuenca, Spain

This city, a 90-minute drive east of Madrid, offers a window onto Spain’s past that many foreigners miss. Observe from the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art, which has works from the 20th Century.
