Lumumba's explosive Magpies allegations

Special report

The feud between Heritier Lumumba and his ex-coach Nathan Buckley and Collingwood has been laid bare in a detailed dossier compiled by the former AFL player. These are some of the damning allegations it contains.

The dossier details how Buckley held an eight-hour mediation session with Lumumba in 2013 after their relationship broke down after Eddie McGuire’s infamous King Kong gaffe.

Mediation session

During the session, Lumumba says Buckley branded him as being too sensitive over the issues he had raised at the club.

HERITIER LUMUMBA

The mediator was shocked by what I was saying but Buckley was adamant that I was the problem – I had ‘gone rogue,’ ‘ flown off the handle’ and ‘thrown McGuire under the bus’.

Lumumba also insists Buckley knew the nickname ‘Chimp’ was being used at the club, despite his denials in 2017. He claims Buckley discussed the use of the nickname in the mediation.

In 2011, Lumumba claims Magpies CEO Gary Pert got “heavily intoxicated” and made “inappropriate comments” in front of players’ wives and partners “which made the partners uncomfortable”.

Toxic club culture

HERITIER LUMUMBA

The players whose partners were present were furious. It was a major distraction and no one, not even coaches that knew, were prepared to confront Pert about it.

Lumumba revealed he later went to Pert’s office and asked him to address the issue with the playing group, which saw the Magpies boss apologise to the players for his actions.

But Lumumba believes his relationship with Pert became irrevocably damaged after the incident.

HERITIER LUMUMBA

I could always feel the tension between us for the remainder of the time I was at the club, which I believe was instrumental in shaping the club’s policy towards me.

In response to the claims, Pert told News Corp Lumumba’s account of the events was inaccurate and that the alleged incident was addressed 11 years ago and resolved.

In the dossier, Lumumba says an assistant coach showed a pornographic image during a 2014 team meeting to emphasise a point that he was making.

Pornography shock

Lumumba said head coach Buckley didn't react and seemed unfazed by the use of the image in the meeting.

HERITIER LUMUMBA

When it came to the culture of the club, he became hyper-defensive about being held to the standards and values he was supposed to be leading.

Buckley said his version of events was “very different” to Lumumba and would not comment on claims that a pornographic image was shown to players during the meeting in question.

Different version

In regards to the dossier, the now former Magpies head coach told SEN: “There’s a lot that’s not right in there.”
