How to avoid 'flurona' this winter

Covid-19 isn’t the only threat to Australians’ health this winter a horrible “double whammy” is on the horizon. But you can be prepared.

Experts are concerned about the twin threat of Covid and the flu, after two years of lockdowns saw influenza cases plunge across the country.

With influenza immunity at a low, Australians are being urged to get their flu jab and any pending Covid-19 shots to avoid severe illness.

While the risk of dual infections —  dubbed 'flurona' —  is low, Brenton Hart, chief pharmacist for TerryWhite Chemmart said people shouldn't be complacent.

We know the flu will be back, and based on what we’re seeing in the northern hemisphere, plus with restrictions easing and borders opening, it may be back with a vengeance.

The flu and Covid jabs can be booked in one appointment. And there are other steps you can take to reduce your risk.

One simple step you can take is to drink more water, said Dr Vincent Candrawinata, clinical nutritionist and antioxidant researcher at Renovatio.

Stay hydrated

Given that the majority of our body is made up of water, Dr Candrawinata said dehydration can have a significant impact on how it functions.

Antioxidants have been medically proven to aid the body’s immune response so ramp up the fruit and vegetables on your plate.

Dr Candrawinata said supporting the immune system with ongoing nutrition rather than bombarding it with vitamins was the best strategy.

Nutrition first

Taking 5000mg of vitamin C when you’re sick puts your organs into overdrive to remove the excess, and the majority will just go through your urine.

Without sufficient rest, your body can be vulnerable to infection. Get enough sleep, and, ideally, top it off with a vigorous morning workout.

Sleep, sweat, repeat

Dr Candrawinata said to aim for 10,000 steps a day and avoid the temptation to hibernate during the cooler months.
