FIVE BREAKOUT STARS FROM THE NRL TRIALS

The pre-season trials have uncovered a host of breakout stars who will have their incumbent teammates more than a little nervous heading into Round 1.

Foxsports.com.au has uncovered the top talent to emerge out of the trials of players who have made fewer than 10 NRL appearances.

XAVIER SAVAGE

Xavier Savage played three games in his rookie NRL season last year but despite the limited minutes he impressed plenty and has raised his game again in 2022.

The 19-year-old was sensational against the Roosters in the first week of trials, scoring the opening try after just four minutes.

EZRA MAM

After a brilliant season for the Souths Logan Magpies, Ezra Mam has shot into the Broncos’ halves conversation.

Brisbane coach Kevin Walters has indicated he would not be afraid to use Mam come Round 1.

SHAQUAI MITCHELL

The older brother of Latrell Mitchell lost almost 30kg training with the Rabbitohs this pre-season and was a shock Indigenous All Stars pick.

(RABBITOHS)

Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou said Shaquai has “NRL potential” and prop could get an opportunity to play alongside his brother in first grade if he impressed in the trials.

LACHLAN ILIAS

Set to wear Adam Reynolds’ No.7 jersey at Souths, one-game rookie Lachlan Ilias is arguably the man with the biggest shoes to fill.

The young halfback has the backing of coach Jason Demetriou to play his role for the team and defer to Cody Walker. It could just bring out the best in both players this season.

MAKAHESI MAKATOA

Any avid reserve grade-watcher will tell you it’s ludicrous that Makahesi Makatoa had to wait until he was 28 years old to make his NRL debut.

Despite missing out on the 17 for the Eels’ last game of 2021, he’ll almost certainly be therefor Round 1.
