Bombshell request as golf civil war takes big twist

Golf

Golf’s civil war has taken another surprising twist after it was revealed Dustin Johnson has applied to join the DP World Tour (formally the European Tour).

As the PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced 17 PGA bans for the rebel defectors to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational, his counterpart Keith Pelley remained unmoved.

Johnson’s request, however, has firmly put the spotlight on Pelley. He must now choose between boosting the DP World Tour’s star power or standing firm in their alliance with the PGA Tour.

Tour veteran Graeme McDowell, 42, pleaded with Pelley not to ban its players.

He has a fantastic opportunity with a lot of European players who would like to subsidise their schedules, especially if we are not allowed to play on the PGA Tour.

Ryder Cup veterans Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood have pleaded with the DP World Tour to let them retain their memberships and eligibility to play or captain the Europe team.

Without the approval, their Ryder Cup ambitions will turn to dust and their hopes of playing in the majors will fade with precious ranking points at stake.

Johnson’s request also came as it was confirmed US Open winner and one of the PGA Tour’s biggest names, Bryson DeChambeau, has joined the LIV Golf Invitational.

DeChambeau reportedly has joined on a deal worth more than $US100million.
