How crypto giant mistakenly gave Melbourne woman $10.5m

BY ASHLEY ARGOON

One of the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platforms has launched legal action after accidentally transferring $10.5 million into a Melbourne woman's account and taking seven months to notice the mistake.

Crypto.com, which has used stars like Matt Damon to advertise its services, has taken Thevamanogari Manivel to the Supreme Court after sending her $10,474,143 in May 2021.

The court heard the company accidentally entered an account number in the payment field instead of a $100 refund but did not realise the mistake until late December 2021.

When it did, Crypto.com made freezing orders against Ms Manivel’s Commonwealth Bank account, but by then the money had been moved around.

Court documents show $10.1m had been dispersed to a different joint account, $430,000 had been transferred to Ms Manivel’s daughter, Raveena Vijian, and that a $1.35m Craigieburn property had been purchased.

Within weeks, the property’s registration was transferred to her sister, Ms Gangadory, who lives in Malaysia, before the company could take freezing orders against her in March.

Crypto.com also launched legal action against Ms Gangadory in an effort to recoup the $1.35m tied to the sale of the Craigieburn property, along with 10 per cent interest.

The Supreme Court has since ordered Ms Gangadory pay the company $1.35m, interest of $27,369 and costs, and that the Craigieburn property be sold.

Separate orders have reportedly been made regarding the rest of the money mistakenly transferred to Ms Manivel.
