6 issues that could rock the Queen’s Jubilee

By Merryn Johns

As Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee will be one of the biggest royal celebrations England has ever seen.

Her Majesty, 96, will mark 70 years on the throne and her remarkable reign will be celebrated publicly over a four-day weekend in June.

But the event may not go smoothly, says royal biographer Ingrid Seward. These are the issues that could cast a shadow over the celebrations.

The Queen's health

The Queen's mobility issues mean she only attends events confirmed by the Palace on the day. What her ability will be like for the Jubilee is unknown.

Seward says she has a mobility scooter and may use it but, "I understand she has some reservations... as she feels it shows her in a vulnerable light".

Harry and Meghan

Recent reports suggest Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be invited to join the Royal Family on the balcony at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

However, Seward says it's doubtful: “I don’t think for one moment Harry and Meghan will attend. He’s got an ongoing legal wrangle over security, that might stop him going at all."

Prince Andrew

After he walked his mother into the thanksgiving service for Prince Philip, speculation was rife Prince Andrew was planning to play a role at the Jubilee.

Seward says: "The Queen would love to have him there but she is sensitive to public opinion, and the opinion after Prince Philip’s memorial was not good."

The brothers

Friction between Harry and Prince William begs the question – will the family try to put it behind them using the Jubilee? Sadly, it’s unlikely, says Seward.

“Prince Harry has already sent all the messages he wants to ... his popularity is very much on the wane... people feel he’s treated his grandmother without very much respect," she says.

Prince Charles

Prince Charles will take a central role in events, and is expected to give a speech, thanking his mother for her lifelong service. But will he be handed the reigns?

Seward says: “Prince Charles and Camilla will be prominent in these celebrations and it will be an opportunity for Charles and his mother to be seen together in a very public situation.”
