'We feel unsafe'

Bec Judd's war of words with Premier

It’s a war of words few saw coming — social media influencer Rebecca Judd clashing with Victorian Premier Dan Andrews over law and order fears in the wealthy Bayside suburb of Brighton. This is how it unfolded.

The controversy was sparked by an Instagram post. Ms Judd wrote she felt unsafe in Brighton, where she lives with her husband, former AFL star Chris Judd, and their four children in a $7.3 million mansion.

Ms Judd has nearly 800,000 followers on Instagram and the post on her safety fears caused enough of a stir for her claims to be put to Premier Dan Andrews, who disputed crime was out of control in Brighton.

Despite recent incidents, including two home invasions, Mr Andrews is confident there isn't a crime problem in the Bayside area but sympathises with Ms Judd's feelings about being unsafe.

Liberal Brighton MP James Newbury weighed into the debate, calling for a police station in Brighton and accusing Mr Andrews of “victim blaming”.

Mr Newbury said Ms Judd wasn't alone in her concerns, with Brighton residents reportedly setting up multiple neighbourhood watch WhatsApp groups in the suburb.

JAMES NEWBURY

I am getting inundated with people who are living in streets where these crimes have occurred. They’re coming across these gangs and being forced to barricade themselves in their bedrooms.
