AFL captains issue season predictions

AFL

Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions are the two most likely to face off in this year’s Grand Final, according to a survey of all 18 AFL club captains.

The survey saw the reigning premiers, Melbourne, voted for six times as the club most likely to reach the decider, while the Lions garnered five votes.

Last year’s other grand finalists, the Western Bulldogs, sat third with three votes.

Captains, whose answers were treated anonymously, were asked to answer five questions.

Among other predictions, only one club captain believed St Kilda could return to the top eight in 2022 after an underwhelming 2021 campaign.

While cross-town rivals Essendon and Carlton both had five votes each to make the top eight.

Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli was a clear favourite for the Brownlow Medal, with more than double the next best in Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver.

After no captain nominated him for last year’s Coleman Medal, six captains are now backing Carlton spearhead Harry McKay to claim the award again in 2022.

Last year’s No.1 draft pick, Jason Horne-Francis, was nominated seven times as the most likely Rising Star winner, edging out fellow young gun Nick Daicos by two votes.
