Melbourne’s four selective high schools have held their top spots as the leading secondary schools in Victoria in 2024, NAPLAN results show.

The best performer is boys’ school Melbourne High, which is the only school in the state to have an average for year nine reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy of more than 700, with an impressive score of 705.2.

The best private school, taking out fifth position overall, is Ballarat Clarendon College, followed by Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Fintona Girls’ School and Lighthouse Christian College Cranbourne.

Other top private school performers include Haileybury College (660.6), Huntingtower School (655), Harkaway Hills College (653.6) and Camberwell Grammar School (652.2).

They are followed by a range of excellent private schools, with the next ranked state high school coming in at number 33. This is Glen Waverley Secondary College, which achieved an impressive score of 626.4.

Overall, there are 23 government schools in the secondary top 100 list, including Victorian College Of The Arts, Mckinnon Secondary College, Highvale Secondary College and Balwyn High School.

Schools that posted results that were well above students with a similar background include Methodist Ladies’ College (637.8), The Knox School (630.6), Nunawading Christian College (619.4) and OneSchool Global (603.2).

Girls’ schools dominated the secondary top 100, with 29 colleges achieving excellent NAPLAN scores, while only nine boys’ schools made the list.

MacRobertson Girls High School took the top place as the state’s leading girls’ government school, achieving a year nine average score of 699. The best girls’ private school was Presbyterian Ladies’ College. The leading non-selective boys’ school was Camberwell Grammar, with a score of 652.2.

Melbourne High principal Dr Tony Mordini said he was “extremely pleased” with the school’s results and commended students on their efforts.

“I also thank the staff that continue to support our students with their academic achievements and their broader development,” Dr Mordini said.

“We believe that we are more than just marks, which is our motto.

“This is why we celebrate these results but also encourage the development of well-rounded young people and equally encourage the students to be involved in extracurricular activities.”

Meanwhile, the state’s top performing primary schools include Haileybury College, with a grade five NAPLAN average of 592.8, with Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Lighthouse Christian College coming in at second and third place.

Oakleigh South Primary School is the best state school performer, achieving a grade five average for all five domains of 584.

Other standout state schools include Serpell Primary School, Beverley Hills Primary School and Vermont Primary school.
