Year 12s are dressing as controversial misogynist Andrew Tate, setting off flares in car parks and posting fake massacre videos to celebrate the end of school.

Muck-up day pranks are back after being cancelled or toned down for the past two years.

While most schools will hold their celebrations from the middle of next week, some have already kicked off their final day festivities.

Anxious leaders at other schools are preparing for the onslaught by hiring security guards and issuing stern warnings to the leaving classes.

At Templestowe College, students are preparing for “Celebration Day” on October 20 rather than “the negative implications of ‘Muck Up’”.

“Clever pranks amuse, damage or clean-up for others does not,” students have been told.

Schools are keen to ensure nothing gets out of hand.

At Carey Baptist Grammar, year 12s have been told their celebrations will take place at the Bulleen sports campus to minimise disruption at the school’s Kew site.

School leaders are keen not to see repeats of infamous pranks such as male students going on rampages in nearby girls’ schools, students landing a helicopter on the school oval, dressed as Arabian princes, or students beheading a chicken.

This year at Braybrook College one student dressed as Andrew Tate, while others appeared as Kim Kardashian, Geishas, the Dali Lama, gladiators and SWAT team police officers.

Students also had end of year festivities at Beth Rivka, throwing toilet paper in trees, putting up crime scene tape and covering parts of the campus in alfoil.

Victorian students are getting inspiration from interstate counterparts who are indulging in gender bending dressing, putting glue on hand rails and putting for-sale signs on teachers’ cars.

One NSW school, St Joseph’s College in Tweed Heads, has already had to counsel year 12s after eight people broke into the campus last week and dug up pavers, threw eggs at buildings, up-ended outdoor furniture, dismantled safety equipment, put honey on doorknobs and set off a fire alarm.

Another prank - believed to have occurred in WA - featured on TikTok shows students bringing toy guns to campus, with another student posting a fake school shooting video.

US students who saw the clip, which has been viewed 500,000 times, and thought it was a real school shooting. The creator, Donald Funazzi, played up to the audience, noting that one student was “spending his last minutes with a smile” and “in Australia glocks come in green”.

Psychologist Sandy Rea said students should be allowed to enjoy muck-up day as long as no one gets hurt and no property is damaged.

“It’s a key transition in their lives and they should be allowed to celebrate,” she said. “We should be saying well done to them and allow them to let off a bit of steam. I’d like to see schools back off sanitising muck-up days too much.

“When else are they going to be allowed to behave like this?” Ms Rea said.

Infamous muck-up day pranks of the past

Firbank Grammar

Boys broke into the school in 2021 and caused thousands of dollars’ damage by spraying graffiti, releasing insects, stealing music equipment and even placing a fish inside a piano. Police were called in to investigate. Muck-up day celebrations by the girls in 2020 were cancelled after the Herald Sun revealed the students were planning to go to the campus dressed as “hookers”, vandalise the campus and prank security guards.

Shore School, NSW

Students were given a range of disturbing, humiliating and illegal tasks and sexual challenges. A leaked document prepared by students detailed how assaults, trespassing, drug-taking and other challenges would earn them points as part of a scavenger hunt. The tasks, which led to a number students getting suspended, included spitting on a homeless man, hit the genitals of a stranger and “shit on a train”.

Christian College Geelong

A helicopter landed on the oval at the school in 2015, with three students dressed as Arabian princes getting out. But the glory was short-lived, with the students prevented from graduating because the helicopter did not have authorisation to land on the Highton school oval. But then Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons - famous for his flamboyance - approved of the stunt, giving the boys a big shout-out on social media and labelling them “all class” and #legendary.

Mallacoota College

Victorian education officials were called in to investigate after year 12 students brought an inflatable sex doll onto the campus of Mallacoota College during 2020 muck-up day festivities. It was reported that at least one teacher was witnessed riding the doll down a playground slide. Sources said the blow-up female doll had visible genitals and was tied to a pole during lunch break and had water and ice thrown on it.

Xavier College

In 2008 the entire year 12 class at the up-market Kew school was suspended after muck-up day pranks included students riding on trams disguised in balaclavas and jumping on a car. The students were allegedly blind drunk and terrorising neighbours. A vigorous game of British Bulldogs led to one student ending up in hospital with a broken collar bone.
