Bacchus Marsh Grammar girls targeted with AI fake nudes

Police have closed the case on an incident where fake nude images of 50 girls at a regional Victorian private school were shared on social media.

Faces of the girls, in years 9 to 12 at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, were used in images of nudes generated by AI (artificial intelligence) earlier this month.

It is believed that old Instagram photos, some of which were from school formals, were doctored into explicit content.

In a statement from Victoria Police, a spokeswoman said police had issued a 17-year-old boy with a caution in relation to allegedly circulating explicit images online.

“After extensive investigations, police consider the matter closed,” she said.

Parents have told the Herald Sun they are angered by the lack of action taken against the boy responsible for generating the images.

“It’s not good enough that barely any action has been taken against him,” one parent said.

“So many young girls have had their livelihoods affected because of this.”

Another parent said the outcome of the police investigation was “disappointing”.

“These girls have to undergo counselling because of this. It has really affected them,” another parent said.

“I hope the school continues education around this issue because these new technologies can be used for sinister purposes.”

Earlier this month, a mother whose daughter attends the school said her daughter “threw up” after coming across fake AI nude images of female students shared on social media.

Emily said her 16-year-old daughter had been left “sick to her stomach” and deeply upset after coming across the material on social media.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar acting principal Kevin Richardson said at the time the school was made aware of the production and circulation of video content that included images of students from the school.

“On behalf of the persons and families affected, Bacchus Marsh Grammar is taking this matter very seriously and we have contacted Victoria Police,” he previously said in a statement to the Herald Sun.

It comes after two male students from Yarra Valley Grammar were expelled last month after creating a cruel and misogynist spreadsheet assessing their female classmates.

The ranking categories included terms such as “wifeys”, “cuties”, “mid”, “object”, “get out” and “unrapeable”.

Yarra Valley Grammar principal Mark Merry had been under intense pressure to take action, with a petition from 118 former students calling for the expulsion of those involved.

Meanwhile, Victoria Police were called in over another scandal at McClelland College in Frankston, where male pupils used a ranking list to rate their female classmates.
