“Girl gang” violence involving year 7 students at an eastern suburbs high school left one 13-year-old in hospital after being attacked by another last week.

Months of unrest between students in years seven, eight and nine at Forest Hill College led to police being called and students sent home amid a campus-wide lockdown.

The incident, which took place on November 16, involved a bloody fight between two year seven boys, with one wielding a locker padlock and the other a large kitchen knife.

Victoria Police have confirmed they were called to an “altercation in a learning facility on Mahoneys Road about 9am.

“A 13-year-old boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be cautioned. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, it is believed the parties are known to each other,” they said.

One parent told the Herald Sun “gang violence and ongoing bullying was not being addressed by staff and has been out of control for months.

“There is a sustained bullying by a girl gang at the school and many of them are year seven girls.

“About 20 kids on and off have been fighting, and one child had their arm broken. At times the girls have outnumbered the boys they were bullying by three to one,” he said.

“Recently about ten of them were held in the wellbeing office and they swarmed the office and kicked the door in.”

The parent said that on November 16 the school “sent kids home for their safety and their parents were called in and an email was sent to the other parents”.

“This was the most disgusting display – not one word about the welfare of the boys. One boy was given a concussion by another child who hit him with a lock.

“The girls have also been threatening people at the local shops – they are brazen.”

A letter from Forest Hill College principal David Rogers 16 told parents that “there was an incident involving two year 7 boys at their lockers before school today that prompted us to implement lockdown and police attended the school. The situation was quickly resolved, allowing us to return to our normal routine.”

A Department of Education spokesperson said it was “an isolated incident” but that “any form of physical threat or violence is completely unacceptable”.

“As with any incident, this is being investigated and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken, including notifying police,” the spokesperson said.

“Full support is being provided to impacted students.”
