A leading Catholic boys’ school has launched an investigation after a spinning wheel with a range of degrading dares to be completed by the team’s “weakest link” was found in a boys’ football changeroom.
The wheel was created by members of the first football team from the school, St Kevin’s College, who played Scotch College the following day.
Teachers found the wheel on Friday, May 10 and removed it immediately.
It comes as ongoing issues at the school include a student bringing a toy gun on campus and using it to taunt staff and allegations that students are drawing penises on their work and quoting Andrew Tate.
The school has denied suggestions from several staff sources that the tasks listed on the wheel were demeaning to girls and women or that it was part of an ongoing hazing ritual.
However, a spokesman for St Kevin’s said some comments on the wheel “contained material that was not consistent with our College values”.
“An investigation into this matter commenced immediately and is ongoing. As is custom, the College will respond appropriately in line with our disciplinary processes.
“It was not seen by any members of the visiting teams using our facilities,” he said.
In a school newsletter after the first football game, which saw St Kevin’s lose to Scotch 68 points to 89, principal Deborah Barker praised the behaviour of students at the game, noting that “senior boys cheered on their mates while the younger ones cheered on their idols”.
No mention was made of the wheel.
One staff member, who said the wheel was being “openly talked about among staff and boys”, said it was “brushed under the carpet”.
“The boys should absolutely know better,” she said.
It comes as staff continue to speak up about the ongoing culture at the school.
One reported that a toy gun was confiscated from a year ten student, which was confirmed by the school.
“He was sanctioned immediately,” the school spokesman said.
Another staff member said: “We have recently had a guest speaker come in to speak to the boys and he made reference to basic maths as ‘girls math’.
The school spokesman confirmed that “an external speaker did present to students on the theme of digital citizenship”.
“The term ‘girl maths’ was referenced in a video he presented to senior students. The term was in context to his presentation,” he said.
Another teacher said there was “clearly a toxic culture among the boys and nothing has changed since the years after the vile tram chant”.
The teacher said senior boys had also scrawled male genitalia and Andrew Tate quotes on whiteboards and assignments. This has been denied by the school.
But the teacher also said the boys’ “behaviour is disgusting and these boys honestly believe there are no repercussions for their actions”.
The Herald Sun has also been told a new teacher, teaching year 10 and 11 pupils, was forced to quit this term after only teaching for a week.
“The boys treated her appallingly, she was an experienced teacher but she still found it difficult to work under these circumstances.
“The boys who forced her to quit wore it as a badge of honour, it’s just awful.
“We have a high staff turnover and it’s beyond concerning. Teachers are just tired and we were so hopeful that things would turn around but they haven’t, if anything things have become worse.”
St Kevin’s College has 19 jobs advertised on its website, including one for an English teacher which was posted on May 9.
