A Melbourne school has launched an investigation after a video of a young man impersonating a student and attending classes in uniform appeared on social media.

Werribee Secondary College is having a Catch Me if You Can moment thanks to a TikTok clip posted last week that has attracted 2.7 million views and 479,000 likes.

The school is looking into the incident and will strengthen its security.

The clip shows the male dressed in full school uniform, including a blazer, tie and backpack.

“I pretended to be a student at my friends school,” it read.

“Got my blazer.”

The clip shows the hoax student sitting in class taking notes and walking around the playground.

“Done a couple dares,” it says, showing the student walking using a crutch and pretending to be injured.

The #sneakingin hashtag is popular among students, who are posting videos of themselves sneaking into schools and other public places.

Some send drones onto school grounds and post the footage.

The clip attracted more than 3000 comments, with the male promising: “I’ll be back soon”.

“Brooo you were in my math class,” said one.

“Thought you were a new student,” said another.

Other students shared stories of sneaking into their friends’ schools. “I did this and got two Saturday detentions and a suspension lol,” said one.

“Somebody did that at my school. We went into lockdown and the police were called. Best science lesson of my life,” another said.

Susan McLean, cyber safety expert, said the clip “raises a whole range of serious issues, not the least the safety of the students”.

“What if that person came in with the intention of stabbing another student?” she said.

“TikTok needs to take responsibility for creating this platform and leaving up so many of these challenges. If there’s no notoriety there’s no reason to be stupid.

“There’s a real pack mentality where people are prompted to do more and more,” she said.

A Department of Education spokesman said the school was “aware of and investigating this incident, and will review and strengthen its processes to ensure any unauthorised person is not present on school grounds”.

A spokeswoman from TikTok said: “Safety is our top priority, which is why TikTok prohibits and removes content that promotes or enables criminal activities and makes reports to law enforcement when warranted. We remain vigilant in our commitment to countering such content and encourage our community to report potential violations of our community guidelines.”
