Students scared to go to school amid brawls, vicious bullying

Students at a school in Melbourne’s west are too scared to attend amid threats of schoolyard bashings and “vicious bullying”.

Parents at a school in Melbourne’s west have spoken out about “vicious bullying” and threats of bashings, urging more action to be taken to protect students.

A mother, whose daughter attends Alamanda K-9 College in Point Cook, said her 15-year-old daughter and other students were being targeted “daily” by bullies.

It comes after the school’s principal last week warned students to be vigilant after a spate of brazen thefts by youth gangs in the area.

Footage circulating last week also showed female students at the school punching, kicking, tackling and wrestling one another in two separate videos.

The Herald Sun has also seen several examples of social media hate pages, where students are targeting other pupils with sickening jokes and comments.

The mother said her daughter was “too scared” to attend school.

“She is really struggling with her mental health because the bullies are posting photos of her on social media and writing horrible things about her appearance.

“They have also targeted her at school at recess and lunchtime including cornering and pushing her.

“I have reported it to the school, but nothing has been done about it. It’s just vicious and needs to stop.”

Other parents have also taken to social media to share their concerns about bullying at the school, saying students are too scared to report it because of backlash.

One mother wrote: “Is anyone else’s child/children experiencing bullying and threats from other students? In this case it is older students bullying and threatening to ‘bash and put my daughter in hospital’.”

“I don’t know what to do,” she said.

“My child doesn’t want me to tell the school because of more backlash. I just think it’s so heartbreaking when your child is too scared to go to school and is very anxious because of this one girl.”

A Department of Education spokesman said students targeted by bullies received full support from schools and that every incident was investigated.

“The health and wellbeing of all students is our top priority and any form of violence or bullying is completely unacceptable,” the spokesman said.

“We have strong anti-bullying policies and deliver programs at schools throughout Victoria to support students to use digital technology responsibly and stay safe online.”

State schools can opt into the Bully Stoppers initiative designed to help students, parents and teachers prevent bullying in schools.

Minors can also make formal complaints about bullying incidents to the eSafety Commissioner.
