A prestigious Warragul high school has retained its position as one of Victoria’s best regional academic schools, while a trailblazing La Trobe Valey primary school recorded Gippsland’s best NAPLAN scores.
NAPLAN 2024 data released on Wednesday revealed St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School in Warragul was the highest high school in Bass Coast and Gippsland.
To determine how each school performed in 2024, the scores for all five test subjects for the
student cohort (Yr 5 or Yr 9) were combined and the average found.
The school was among one of the best regional high schools for year 9 NAPLAN scores with an average score of 593.
It comes after St Paul’s had the seventh best NAPLAN scores for regional high schools last year.
Gippsland Grammar in Sale was the second best for the region with an average score of 589.0, while St Thomas Aquinas College in Tynong was the third best with an average score of 582.2.
Churchill Primary School had the best primary school results in Gippsland.
The school recorded an average score of 520.2, excelling in grammar, spelling and reading.
Churchill’s results for all five categories — reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy — were all “well above” the state average.

The strong results reflect the successful implementation of a new teaching style back in 2018 called “structured literacy” which emphasised using structured phonics to help kids learn to read.
Churchill was one of the first schools in Victoria to adopt this approach which has since been rolled out statewide.
The top score capped off a successful year for Churchill Primary, with its principal Jacquie Burrows receiving the Outstanding Primary Principal Award at the Victorian Education Excellence Awards last month.
