St Kevin’s College’s has lost one of its most senior teachers after the resignation of their religious director.

John Abrahams, Director of Faith and Mission, has been on leave since the start of term three after complaints were made about him “massaging” the shoulders of young students.

The Herald Sun understands while the complaints were investigated by the Commission for Children and Young People, they were not substantiated.

No action was taken against him and he remains a registered teacher.

But Mr Abrahams has made the decision to leave the school, with the veteran educator believed to be upset with the circumstances surrounding his leave and the investigation.

The veteran educator and membership of the school’s leadership team was the teacher in charge at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Mr Abrahams has also held senior roles with Catholic Education Melbourne and had been teaching for more than 30 years.

He was hired at St Kevin’s by former acting principal of the school, John Crowley, although he has been strongly supported by current principal Deborah Barker.

A spokesman for St Kevin’s said the college “makes no comment on individuals in these matters”.

“St Kevin’s College follows the required processes to ensure a child safe environment for all students,” he said.

“John Abrahams has been on leave. As the year concludes, he has made the decision to resign from his position at the College to continue his career elsewhere.

“Given this, the role of Director of Faith and Mission will be advertised internally prior to the conclusion of the year,” the spokesman said.

Mr Abraham’s resignation was communicated to staff on Wednesday morning.

There was no mention of the CCYP investigation.
