NAPLAN data makes it ‘blisteringly clear’ education reform is needed

Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Melbourne High School are Victoria’s best schools for NAPLAN results, the Herald Sun can reveal.

The release of the 2023 school-level NAPLAN results shows selective schools and private colleges are the top performers at both primary and secondary levels.

It’s the first time NAPLAN schoolwide results have been published in the same year the test was conducted, but changes to the test timing and measurement method mean results are not directly comparable to previous years.

The results, which dip to below 500 at a number of state schools, come as nearly one in three Victorian students – or about 300,000 pupils – are failing to meet national standards in English and maths.

Despite the excellent results of the best schools, gaps between the highest and lowest performing schools are wider than they have ever been – more than 200 points for both primary and secondary sectors.

PLC, a private girls’ school in Burwood, leads the pack for primary results, with an average of 613 points for year five reading, writing, numeracy, grammar and spelling.

Second overall for primary schools is Eltham College (602), followed by Ballarat Clarendon College (593), Ballarat Christian College (589), St Andrew’s Christian College (588) and Huntingtower School (586). The highest ranked state primary school is Wheelers Hill with an average score of 580, followed by Bentleigh West (574), Oakleigh South (568) and Doncaster Gardens (567).

Melbourne High is the leading secondary school, with a year nine average of 704, followed by the state’s three other selective state campuses, MacRobertson Girls’ (700), Nossal High (687) and Suzanne Cory High (684).

They are followed by a range of leading private schools, with the next ranked state high school coming in at number 29, Glen Waverley Secondary College with 626.

PLC principal Cheryl Penberthy, said the school was pleased with its NAPLAN results but “don’t use NAPLAN as a tool define a student’s progress”.

Huntingtower School incoming vice-principal Susan Swan described the students’ performance in NAPLAN as a “natural consequence of the approaches (the school) takes”.

“We look at the whole child and support the whole child, not just their academic development but all of their growth,” she said.

Eltham College head of ELC and junior school Eleni Goulas said the school took a “strength-based approach” to learning reflected in the excellent year five NAPLAN results.

“We assessed and audited our curriculum to ensure we are covering all the core skills across the junior school,” she said.

Another leading school is St Finbar’s Primary School in Brighton East, which is ranked 204 out of thousands of primary schools with an average score of 528 for year five results.

Deputy principal Steele Anderson said the school was pleased with their results which were a “credit to the hard work of students and teachers, in partnership with families”.

“We are most proud of the student growth that this data demonstrates,” he said.

Chloe Carlyon, 11, a St Finbar’s year five student who sat NAPLAN this year, said her favourite subjects are reading and writing.

“This is why I am interested in being a literacy leader for my last year in primary school,” she said.
