Northern Melbourne’s fastest growing schools – and the ones going backwards – have been revealed.

An analysis of federal government data has revealed every Northern Melbourne region school’s student enrolment trajectory over the past five years – exposing where student numbers have risen and declined the most.

Edgars Creek Secondary College in Wollert is Northern Melbourne’s fastest growing school, with enrolments increasing by 1041 per cent in the five years from 2018 to 2022.

Edgars Creek Secondary College principal Adam Smith said the school was working to ensure programs were well resourced after the school’s significant growth.

“We anticipate growth as part of the strategic planning process,” he said.

“We are equipped with the right number of teachers, support staff, wellbeing, and health promotion staff so that as students transition into the school, they are well supported to grow into their new environment.”

Mr Smith credits his school’s high levels of growth to high levels of new year 7 students.

“Year 7 transition is an important part of this process and our work with our feeder primary schools is key to our success,” he said.

The second fastest growing school was Our Lady of the Way Catholic Primary School in Wallan with a 674 per cent change while Oscar Romero Catholic Primary School in Craigieburn recorded the third biggest change with a 319 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, the analysis also highlighted the northern Melbourne region’s schools in decline with Ozford College in Melbourne recording a 78 per cent drop over five years.

Lower Plenty Primary School had a 65 per cent drop and St Andrews Primary School saw a 37 per cent decline.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority figures are the most up to date enrolment numbers that include all state and private schools nationally.
