A seven-year-old child was left behind after school swimming classes at a Boronia public pool last Friday.
The frightened little girl was left in a changing room at Knox Leisureworks by teachers from a local state school.
The girl called out from the change rooms, attracting the attention of an elderly man who took her to staff who contacted her mother and the school.
A Department of Education spokesman said they were aware of the incident.
“The school has provided support for the student and is revising their excursion procedures to prevent any recurrence,” he said.
The child’s mother posted on social media about how grateful she was for those who found her little girl and looked after her.
“I want to say a huge thank you to the elderly gentleman who first found her shouting for help from the change rooms! And to the lifeguards that first attended and helped her out and kept her safe,” she wrote.
“And to any other people or staff at the pool who were involved in the terrible incident! And making my daughter feel safe and making sure she was kept safe.
“Thank you from one very freaked out Mumma.”
“The biggest thank you in the world for taking care of my most precious girl! I really hope some amazing things come your way.”
The post attracted criticism from ex-teachers, who said a headcount of children should be mandatory.
Others praised the people who helped the little girl.
A spokesman from Knox Leisureworks has been contacted for comment.
In 2019 Belgravia Leisure were announced as the new operators of the pool, taking over from former operator YMCA Victoria.
The facility is owned by Knox Council, which has flagged a new outdoor aquatic play park for the centre.
