TOP-performing secondary state schools across Melbourne and the regions are producing excellent results on fees as low as a few hundred dollars a year.

The Herald Sun has compiled a list of Victoria’s best academic high schools according to average year nine NAPLAN results.

It shows many do an outstanding job despite having between $9000 and $16,000 a year in income per student.

In some cases this is less than half the funds spent at private schools in the surrounding areas.

In Melbourne’s outer suburbs, Footscray High School, Preston High School and Mordialloc College are all in the top 50 despite having 10-20 per cent of students in the bottom quarter socio-economic status.

Other standouts include schools in Charlton, Donald and Geelong.

Lavers Hill K-12 College, located near Apollo Bay, is ranked 22 in NAPLAN results for state schools, despite having 65 per cent of students in the bottom quarter socio-economic status.

In Victoria’s north, Charlton College came in at 26, with 40 per cent of students coming from the lowest socio-economic background.

Mount Alexander College is ranked 34, with a fifth of all students coming from low-income households.

The Flemington school receives just over $15,000 per student per year, which is well below nearby city private schools.

Principal Dani Angelico said the staff were “were doing cartwheels” when the NAPLAN results were published this week.

“In 2019 we had 62 per cent of year 9s in the bottom two bands for writing and now it is only 19 per cent,” she said.

“It is such a good news story off the back of two pretty hard years.”

Ms Angelico said some of the school’s catchment area was gentrified but a proportion came from social housing.

“We’ve spent equity money on literacy and numeracy intervention and tutoring money on the year seven classes,” she said.

The first four positions on the top 50 state school list are occupied by the state’s four selective high schools, MacRobertson Girls’ High, Melbourne High, Nossal High and Suzanne Cory. They are followed by schools in upper-income areas such as Balwyn, McKinnon, Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Brighton, Canterbury and Kew.

Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins said the results showed the state government’s “record investments in education are paying off, with Victorian students continuing to achieve some of the highest NAPLAN results in the country”.

Preston High School was among those in the top 50 despite having 10-20 per cent of students in the bottom quarter socio-economic status.

“These positive results are a testament to the extraordinary efforts of students, parents, carers, teachers and principals right across the state,” she said.

Parents Victoria CEO Gail McHardy paid tribute to the excellent results attained by government school students. However, she said there was an urgent need for governments to expedite funding commitments for state schools.

“How can it be an equal playing field when a student’s learning environment and support are so variable between and within school sectors?” she said.
