A 15-year-old male student was naked in the foyer of a special school in Cranbourne, where he was photographed by a number of girls who distributed the photos, the Herald Sun can reveal.
Staff at Marnebek School in Cranbourne were only alerted to the boy’s presence at the school’s entrance when someone who received a photo – a grandparent of one of the girls – rang them.
The boy, who is non-verbal but does not have a history of taking his clothes in public, was naked in the foyer for more than half an hour on April 29.
It’s understood the incident has been referred to Victoria Police.
It’s the second incident involving children with disabilities to come to light this week, alongside a police investigation of the alleged assault and forcible restraint of a ten-year old girl on a special school bus by a chaperone.
The boy’s mother said her son was no longer attending Marnebek School, which is one of 44 schools highlighted by disability rights activists for their treatment of students.
“He was banging his head on the window, walked on broken glass as he wasn’t wearing shoes and even though they get $220k funding for him he didn’t even have a chair to sit on when he started,” she said.
“I want them to be held accountable for what happened to him, but it’s just been brushed under the rug.”
Julie Phillips from Disability Rights, an advocacy group, said it was “unbelievable that school staff allowed the three female students to go home and take the naked photos on their phones with them”.
Department of Education rules ban students from having their mobile phones at school.
In the second incident, a 10-year-old girl was travelling on a Westernport Roadlines bus to Bass Coast Specialist School when she was held down by the chaperone after allegedly taking her seatbelt off.
The girl, who has Down syndrome, autism and ADHD, and who is also non-verbal, was understood to have been forcibly held against the seat for more than 10 minutes. The incident, which left extensive bruising and abrasions on the girl’s arms and chest, has been reported to police.
The girl’s mother said: “The school is wonderful, but I am really worried about what happened on that bus,” she said.
The girl is no longer travelling to school by bus.
A spokeswoman from Victoria Police said they “are investigating following reports of an assault in the Bass Coast area on 15 March”.
A Department of Education spokesperson confirmed the bus incident and said they had
“provided support to the student involved”.
The chaperone is not currently working on the bus route in question.
A Department of Education spokesman said: “Marnebek School Cranbourne has taken appropriate disciplinary action following an incident that occurred at the school last month, and has been supporting the impacted student.” “The school continues to educate all students about bullying and cyber-safety.”
