A Bendigo school teacher and bodybuilding enthusiast has been charged with reckless conduct causing serious injury.

The Victorian schools’ regulator has disqualified Ryan Geier, who used to work at Eaglehawk Secondary College on the outskirts of Bendigo, from teaching.

Last week the Victorian Institute of Teaching cancelled Mr Geier’s registration, meaning he is disqualified from teaching in a school or early childhood setting for five years.

He is due to face Bendigo Magistrates Court on Friday for a hearing for which it is indicated he’ll plead guilty.

Mr Geier is a keen bodybuilder who has competed in leagues including the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation.

His Instagram account contains several shirtless photos showing him flexing his muscles. Mr Geier wrote on Instagram that he loved competing and being on stage.

“One week post comp! Filling out and still lean! Sweaty gloss always help,” he said.

In an older post, he said: “Absolutely pumped with a silver trophy for my stage debut! And an extra medal for the hometown crowd.”

Mr Geier worked at Eaglehawk Secondary College in 2018 and 2019, with social media posts showing him being dunked at a fair day, with the caption “Sun’s out, gun’s out”.

He was also the school’s SRC co-ordinator in 2019, leading a group of students to Melbourne to see a taping of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Eaglehawk Secondary College is a year 7 to 10 school that prepares students for years 11 and 12, further study or the workforce.

Several other teachers have also been suspended this year including Davide Colombo, 26, who taught at Warrandyte Primary School.

And Mark Scherf, who most recently taught physical education at Mill Park Secondary College, was suspended on an interim basis last month.

In 2021-22 – the latest figures available – the Victorian Institute of Teaching refused the registrations of 37 applicants who had serious conduct matters.

The VIT suspended the registration of 20 teachers on an interim basis who it deemed might pose an “unacceptable risk of harm to children”.

A Department of Education spokesman said Mr Geier had not worked at Eaglehawk Secondary since March 2021.
