The dead Melbourne Girls’ Grammar teacher had a history of massaging the shoulders of female students, talking about orgasms and meeting girls in his office, the Herald Sun can reveal.

More details about the teaching practices of the school’s Head of Learning Enhancement David Simpson are emerging following his sudden death this month after child safety issues were reported to police.

It’s believed he also sent an obscene photo to a student.

The Herald Sun has been told two teachers raised concerns about Mr Simpson’s behaviour and “closed door meetings and multiple girls in his office all the time” in June and July.

There are also allegations he spoke about orgasms and rubbed the shoulders of students.

Calls are mounting for principal Dr Toni Meath to stand down and for a formal investigation of the school’s child safety practices to be undertaken.

Police inquiries are continuing.

It is understood the school received complaints from teachers and students as far back as February about an allegation of inappropriate touching of a student.

“The cover up is vile, teachers at MGGS are sick of this,” one source said.

“The school never protects their students or teachers.”

A mother, whose daughter attends the school, also told the Herald Sun there had been a “culture of cover ups” at the school.

“The school knew about issues with Simpson’s behaviour months before the allegations surfaced,” she said.

“There needs to be a formal investigation into the handling of these complaints.

“Students have a right to come to school and feel safe.”

Dr Meath started at the $40,000 per year South Yarra girls’ school in 2019, and has a number of high-profile appointments, including the board of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, a director of the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia and a national fellow of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders.

She is also a past principal at MacRobertson Girls’ High.

A Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School spokeswoman said: “We reiterate that the school followed its child safety and mandatory reporting procedures, including notifying Victoria Police, and our priority remains on supporting students, staff, and families.”

“The school uses a variety of specialist recruitment firms, including for a current position announced in May, to appoint an additional Deputy Principal.

“Finally, there is no veracity to the suggestion that the principal’s position is under question.”
