Bathrooms at Parkdale Secondary College locked over concerns of vaping and anti-social behaviour

A student urinated themselves and was left humiliated because of a new policy at Parkdale Secondary College that’s aimed at deterring vaping.

Vaping trends ‘absolutely explode in popularity'

Parents at Parkdale Secondary College are alarmed that their children have been locked out of the bathrooms during class hours, after complaints of vaping and other anti-social behaviour.

During classroom hours, students can only access toilets in a designated building with a pass.

One parent said a male student was left “humiliated” after he urinated himself in front of other students.

“The school has lost control of its kids, what happened was not right and I feel for the student involved as this shouldn’t have happened,” the parent said.

The school has contacted the student’s mother about the incident and provided support for the student.

A Department of Education and Training spokesman said students at all schools across the state can access the toilets with permission during classroom hours.

“Students are encouraged to use the toilets during scheduled breaks to reduce the time spent out of class,” the spokesman said.

An alarming new study, which surveyed staff from 196 Australian schools, including 48 Victorian schools, found more than 80 per cent of high schools are aware of students who vape, with the majority reporting a spike in the past two years.

In other school news, the Department of Education has denied a recent fight at Strathmore Secondary College was racially motivated.

The fight, which has been filmed and widely viewed on social media, involved a student of African background and four others.

The African student was beaten by the other students in a bathroom, but the department has denied it was racially motivated.

The Herald Sun has also been told by a school insider that a humanities teacher at the school described an African student as being from the animal kingdom because the student would not make eye contact.

A new report, released in October, revealed that ninety-five per cent of girls and 78 per cent of boys of African descent said they had been discriminated against because of their race, ethnicity or religion.

A department spokesman said: “Strathmore SC has taken strong disciplinary action in relation to a recent issue involving a student fight.”
