Ballarat teacher at centre of expletive-ridden video quits

The teacher who launched a scathing expletive-ridden take-down of students’ assignments has sensationally quit after footage of the rant was leaked to the media.

The year 12 English teacher who swore at students during an in-class video recording is no longer employed at Ballarat Clarendon College.

The expletive-ridden video, which has been circulating among students and parents, led to the school issuing a statement saying it “immediately relieved the teacher involved from all teaching duties”.

“This morning, the teacher resigned and is no longer employed by the school,” it said.

“We have commenced a process around this incident that will be followed appropriately and sensitively. As a community, we need to be respectful of those involved who have the right to confidentiality.

“The recording was of a year 12 class that occurred earlier that week in which the teacher’s behaviour fell outside that which would be expected of a staff member at Ballarat Clarendon College,” the statement said.

The school’s response, issued on Tuesday in response to Herald Sun media reporting of the teacher’s behaviour, differed from a letter sent to students on Monday. The earlier letter focused more on stopping students from sharing the video, which the school said “falls outside of our community expectations and, to be clear, falls outside the law”.

The letter said there was a “range of implications for those sharing the video”.

However, by Tuesday the school’s focus had moved to support and counselling.

The new statement read: “The year 12 cohort has been addressed and the students in the class have been provided with support and opportunities for counselling from our Wellbeing team. The parents of the students in the class were contacted over the weekend to alert them.

“As ever, throughout this process, our highest priority has been the safety and wellbeing of our students.

“We are dealing with a complex and difficult situation. As we follow the appropriate processes in resolving this matter, we respectfully ask people to desist from sharing the video and to delete the video if they have or received it.”

It is understood that a number of parents with children at the school were unhappy with the response to the incident.

One told the Herald Sun they were unhappy “the focus was all about punishing the students rather than the behaviour of the teacher which was clearly inappropriate”.
