Terrifying footage shows policeman flung into air by reversing car

A man has faced court after he allegedly drove off in a stolen car while a police officer was clinging to the side of the vehicle.

The officer was left with minor injuries after the 30-year-old man reversed into another vehicle in a car park off Simmons St in South Yarra on August 14.

It is understood police first approached the man because he was not wearing a mask.

He allegedly ran away from police to the car park and as he tried to flee the scene in the car, police attempted to stop him by opening both the driver and passenger doors of the vehicle.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it is believed the man sped from the scene before crashing into another vehicle.

“The driver allegedly reversed with one of the police officers still clinging to the side of the car, before the officer was thrown into parked cars nearby,” she said.

“The driver allegedly fled in the stolen car and dumped the car in Bray Street before being arrested shortly after.”

Jahdon Tamati, 30, fronted court on Monday charged with 20 offences including intentionally exposing police to risk with a motor vehicle, recklessly causing injury, assault and stealing a $60,000 Range Rover.

He also faces a fine for allegedly breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Tamati, of St Kilda, did not apply for bail and will return to court in November.
