A Victoria Police sergeant has been charged with arson and a woman has been charged with criminal damage over a house fire at Laverton in Melbourne’s western suburbs in March.

A policeman has been charged with arson, fraud and weapons offences over a house fire in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The sergeant, from the North West Metropolitan Region, is facing counts of criminal damage by fire, arson, obtain property by deception, attempt to obtain property by deception, attempt to obtain financial advantage by deception, possession of prohibited weapons and other charges.

The fire happened in Laverton in March.

A 42-year-old woman has been charged with criminal damage by fire, attempt to obtain property by deception, attempt to obtain financial advantage by deception and possession of prohibited weapons in relation to the same investigation relating to the incident.

Both have been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews attended a blaze in Laverton in which a brick and weatherboard home was damaged on March 27.

They wore breathing apparatus to confirm the property was vacant.

Thirty firefighters worked to control the fire.
