An accused killer has been dragged screaming from a courtroom by security guards as he was charged with the murder of a young tradie in a CBD high-rise on the weekend.
Rian Farrell, 22, wept loudly as he faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court after he was charged with the stabbing death of Liam Cahill on Sunday.
Friends of Farrell screamed “stay strong brother” and “love you man” as prison guards attempted to lead him from the dock.
The Newport man cried, slammed the security screen and tried to hold onto the door frame at the end of his brief filing hearing with guards forced to drag him away.
The court heard it was the man’s first time in custody and a psychiatric report had been prepared.
Cahill, was killed after a wild party broke out at an AirBnB in a La Trobe St apartment complex in the Docklands on Saturday night.
Farrell did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until August.
Outside court, supporters of the accused swore at the media and pushed a cameraman.
Residents in the high-rise described seeing Mr Cahill lying lifeless on the 15th floor corridor as his friends worked frantically to perform CPR on him.
A neighbour who lives on the same floor said he was preparing to go to bed about 11pm when he heard screaming and cries for help. He said multiple neighbours peered out from their doorways and watched the scene unfold.
He said Mr Cahill was originally lying face down and was unresponsive as his friends flipped him over onto his back and performed chest compressions and mouth to mouth resuscitation.
Another neighbour said the apartment was permanently rented out on Airbnb and was frequently used by guests who had loud parties.
