A Corio man has been charged over West Gate Bridge hooning incident

A 23-year-old Corio man is facing up to 10 years' jail if he is found guilty of the serious driving offences he is facing over a hooning incident on the West Gate Bridge in May.

West Gate Bridge hoons

Victoria’s top road cop Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy confirmed on radio this morning police had tracked down a man after a video of hoons driving erratically across the bridge surfaced online last month.

Ms Murphy told 3AW the driver had been charged with serious offences, which could result in a jail term of up to 10 years if convicted.

“Very pleased we managed to track the individual down,” she said.

“Just because you might not get caught at the time doesn’t mean we (won’t) get you in the end.

“If you’re in a car and behaving so poorly, we will make sure you are charged with the appropriate offences.”

In the video posted to social media, a group of people can be seen in hanging out the windows of a light blue sedan as it fishtails across four lanes of the usually-busy bridge.

The car spins in circles, doing burnouts as smoke steams from its tyres.

Alarmingly, other vehicles can be seen ahead of the hoons and oncoming traffic passes on the opposite side of the bridge.

The 23-year-old Corio man has been charged with conduct endangering life, careless driving, improper use of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

The charges follow an alleged high-risk driving incident on the West Gate Bridge just after midnight on May 19, which was brought to the attention of police after being shared widely on social media.

The man is expected to face Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 18.

Ms Murphy said the car hadn’t been impound at this stage.
