A fatal confrontation in which Latrobe Valley teenager Nicholas Henry was killed may have been triggered by a theft hours earlier.
Mr Henry, 19, was allegedly blamed for a vehicle break-in in central Morwell last Friday night.
By 12.30am the next morning, he had suffered severe stab wounds after an alleged run-in with a group of men on Buckley St.
The 19-year-old from neighbouring Churchill was found near his van and died soon after in hospital.
Mr Henry had about an hour earlier unexpectedly called in at the home of a woman he knew and told her he was concerned for his safety.
Homicide squad detectives have now charged three Morwell men over the murder.
Corey Smart, 23, and Abraham Abas, 19, on Tuesday face court and were remanded in custody until July 19.
Corey Smart’s brother Brayden, 20, was the first person charged when detectives arrested him on Sunday.
Investigators remain in Morwell, where they continue to interview witnesses.
It is unclear whether there will be more arrests.
Mr Henry is believed to have been living in his van and couch-surfing in the weeks before his death.
The town has been abuzz with rumours and speculation about why he died and whether more than three people were involved
An ex-girlfriend of Mr Henry shared her anguish about their last phone conversation.
“It is killing me that our last conversation you told me you loved me and I hung up without saying it back,” ex-girlfriend Ms Samantha Blanch said.
“I hate that you have had your life taken away from you like this.
“I am so sorry, Nick, that I wasn’t there to protect you. I feel like there is a hole in my chest. I don’t want to come to terms with the fact you are gone.”
Ms Blanch said Mr Henry had an impact on “every single person” he met.
“You might have driven most people crazy half the time but you always knew how to make everyone smile,” she said. “I already miss you so much.”
