Dozens of speeding cyclists and scooter riders have been charged during a police crackdown in Southbank.

Victoria Police nabbed more than 100 cyclists, electric bike and scooter riders over three weeks during Operation River Run, in an effort to improve pedestrian safety.

A total of 45 people were charged on summons for travelling over 23km/h while riding a bike or a scooter.

They will all attend court and face $1652 fines.

Another 33 riders were fined for not wearing a helmet and nine were fined for using unregistered scooters or skateboards.

Officers issued a further 500 warnings to cyclists and scooter riders throughout the three week sting.

Acting Senior Sergeant Brett Sidebottom said police would continue to conduct regular patrols in the area.

“We know the majority of people using the space are trying to do so safely, however there were a small amount of people blatantly doing the wrong thing who were

penalised or now face charges to be heard at court,” he said.

“We had the opportunity to engage with many people as part of this operation – commuters and local residents who use a range of transport methods including

cycling, scooters and walking.”

Police also processed seven people for other crimes including outstanding warrants for criminal damage and armed robbery, as well as one person for carrying a controlled weapon, resisting arrest and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
