A teenager’s twin sister witnessed the car crash that killed her brother, with witnesses describing “screams” at the scene.
Paramedics fought to revive the 19-year-old, who suffered life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a car on Childs Rd in Lalor about 7.30pm.
Police allege the 19-year-old was hit by a car while crossing the road using a pedestrian crossing outside Lalor North College.
Lalor resident Joao Martins said he heard a “pretty loud bang” outside his house.
“I heard screams,” Mr Martins said.
“It was a pretty loud bang. The impact was quite loud. I presumed it was a car accident.”
Mr Martins said the teen was still alive when he rushed out, prompting him to call triple-zero while others performed CPR.
“The teen’s sister was distraught,” he said. “She was in a shocked state.”
The teen’s father came to the scene shortly after the crash with other family members.
“He was in shock, he was screaming and crying,” he said.
“It is very tragic, very sad. The mood afterwards was mainly sorrow.”
It is understood the family live close to the accident scene and the teen who was killed was with his twin sister at the time he was struck.
Neighbours told the Herald Sun the stretch of road has a 70kmh speed limit and they would be happy for it to be reduced.
The driver of the car, an 80-year-old Reservoir man, has been released pending further inquires.
“The pair had already crossed two lanes and the centre median strip when the man was struck by the westbound car,” a police spokesman said.
Investigators believe that a number of cars stopped at the scene but left before providing their details and so are appealing to those drivers or passengers to come forward.
