A Victoria Police officer who was already on suspension and facing criminal charges was arrested on Friday night after allegedly throwing a cup of hot soup in the face of his roommate.
Senior Constable Christopher Kerley, 62, was bailed after appearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday night.
He was suspended on May 31 last year and had been living with another tenant in a complex in Malvern East when Friday night’s fight broke out.
Kerley, who had drunk a bottle of wine before the incident, was bailed by Magistrate Bob Kumar despite the police prosecutor arguing the suspended police officer was an unacceptable risk.
Police have CCTV footage which shows the alleged assault. The roommate - who has now moved out - received scalding injuries in the alleged attack.
He has been charged with making threats to kill, intentionally causing injury, assault by kicking, theft, possessing a prohibited weapon, unlawful assault and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Kerley, who was based in the force’s eastern region prior to his suspension, was already on bail following two separate police cases against him before Friday night’s incident.

The court heard Kerley had displayed erratic behaviour and there were concerns over his mental health and consumption of alcohol.
As part of his bail conditions he will have to report daily to Caulfield police station and not drink any alcohol.
Kerley will be back before Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on February 20.
