Victorian Senator Sarah Henderson is suing a former Geelong councillor for defamation over claims she posted derogatory tweets about her.
The Liberal Senator has accused ex-councillor Jan Farrell of posting two tweets to the @Geelong_Elite Twitter page in May 2019.
Senator Henderson is suing for damages, including aggravated damages, interest and costs, and further orders that the court deems fit.
However, Ms Farrell told the Herald Sun she was not behind the @Geelong_Elite Twitter page or had any involvement with the tweets. She said the claims against her were “ridiculous”.
A writ filed in the Supreme Court of Victoria last Wednesday named Ms Farrell as the defendant and alleged she had uploaded, and thereby published, two tweets, which exposed Senator Henderson to “hatred, ridicule and contempt”.
The court document included screenshots of the tweets, one of which had a photoshopped image of Ms Henderson in an orange prison jumpsuit and the false claim that she was ‘out of office and now into jail’.
The other tweet referred to the Senator as ‘sleazy’ and a ‘sycophant’.
According to the writ, Senator Henderson “has suffered, and continues to suffer, loss and damage”.
Senator Henderson did not respond to a request for comment on Monday night.
