A prison officer is in hospital after being bashed by a criminal at the state’s biggest maximum security jail.
The officer suffered head injuries after being ambushed by the inmate at the privately run Port Phillip Prison at Truganina in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
The jail houses some of Victoria’s most dangerous criminals.
Officers are currently in dispute with management over a pay claim.
They say they are paid too little for the hazardous work they do.
