Police are yet to identify the mother of a baby girl found dumped on the beach in Seaford.

The Herald Sun has been told police do not know who the newborn’s mum was or what led to the baby’s tragic death and it is understood homicide squad detectives are yet to rule out foul play.

Investigators are also looking at the possibility the baby’s death was the result of an unwanted pregnancy.

Her cause of death remains unknown.

Passers-by found the dead newborn alongside her placenta and umbilical cord on the beach walking track opposite Nepean Highway about 4.30pm on Wednesday April 8.

The discovery was called in to police, triggering a huge SES and police search to find clues surrounding the tragic death.

Initially it was estimated the girl died three to 10 days prior to being found.

Further tests were being done to determine a more exact time frame.

However police believe she likely laid dead on the beach for two days before she was discovered.

Forensic testing suggests it was likely she has been dumped at the beach between 7am and 5pm on Monday April 6.

The physical and mental wellbeing of the mother has been a source of serious concern for police.

On numerous occasions police have urged her to come forward, stressing her wellbeing is “the primary focus of the investigation”.

Local Briony Featonby said news of the baby’s death was “heart-wrenching”.

“I coudn’t even put it into words how it makes me feel. There isn’t much information for the local residents, we don’t know much, but from what we do know it is extremely heart-wrenching,” she said.
