A man has fronted court charged with murder following a deadly Carlton brawl.

Anthony Wilson, 56, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday accused of killing Amara Lansana, 34, on Friday evening.

Appearing via video link from prison, Mr Wilson wore a surgical mask and had large and bloodied cuts to his face and forehead.

No details were aired about the alleged fatal assault on Victoria St however it was confirmed it was not family-violence related.

Mr Lansana, of Carlton, died in hospital after he was found injured and left for dead following the violent attack involving several men shortly after 6.15pm on October 30.

Mr Wilson did not speak throughout the brief administrative hearing as his defence lawyer attempted to have his name suppressed, saying the remand brief was “somewhat deficient” and “extremely lacking” and her client would be fighting the charges.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg rejected the application.

The court heard CCTV footage and DNA is still being gathered by investigators.

Katrina Harman, for Mr Wilson, said it was her client’s first time in custody and requested he see a custodial nurse as he required medication for mental health issues.

Mr Wilson handed himself into police at Moonee Ponds on Saturday afternoon.

He made no application for bail and will return to court on January 25.

The brawl was captured on camera shortly before the victim was found nearby.

CCTV footage seen by the Sunday Herald Sun shows a fight erupting in Therry St with several men swinging punches at each other.

It is not known whether the accused is one of those captured on video in the fight.

A witness, who asked not to be named, described the incident.

“The young man was being followed across the street from the north side of Victoria St by an older man in his early 30s who was assaulting the younger man who was trying to get away,” he said.

He said the young man was then repeatedly punched.

“I didn’t see any kicking but I certainly saw some heavy blows from the back.”

He said the assailant left the victim “lying there”. “The ambulance arrived and they were working on him a good 15 to 20 minutes trying to revive him. It didn’t look good,” the witness said.
