Homicide Squad detectives have charged Marco Deng following a fatal stabbing in Melbourne’s CBD on Monday.
The 22-year-old was arrested on Thursday morning and has been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Kurunjang man Machar Kot on Market St about 5am on June 22.
He has been remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
In the hours prior to his arrest, Mr Deng tried to hand himself in at a suburban police station but left when he found it was closed.
Mr Deng went to Caroline Springs police station in the western suburbs on Thursday on the third day of a homicide squad hunt over a fatal CBD stabbing.
But the 22-year-old found the station was closed because of coronavirus and he was forced to go to a nearby medical centre.
Police were contacted and arrested him soon after.
Caroline Springs is in Brimbank, one of the municipalities recently hit by a surge in coronavirus numbers.
Victoria Police has been approached for comment.
Mr Deng, of Burnside Heights, had been wanted since Monday’s alleged killing outside a hotel in Market St.
Machar Kot, 21, of Kurunjang died from injuries suffered when violence broke out at about 5am.
Mr Deng, 22, was on charges of aggravated carjacking, affray and unlawful assault before his weekend court appearance.
A day later, he allegedly fatally stabbed 21-year-old Machar Kot.
The Herald Sun has also confirmed that Mr Deng was on Saturday charged with committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Mr Deng faced court on Sunday, charged with offences including possessing cannabis and shop theft.
Melbourne Magistrates’ Court records reveal he pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $650 before being released on an adjourned undertaking the next day.
The court ordered Mr Deng “be of good behaviour during the period of adjournment” which lasts one year.
The commit indictable offence while on bail charge related to a series of alleged offences including aggravated carjacking, unlawful assault, affray and criminal damage.
He is due to face court in July over those matters.
Machar’s sister, Anhial Kot, said the pain of losing her older brother was a “nightmare” she would never wake up from.
“Mitch left a mark on the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him,” she said.
“(He was) the most charismatic, selfless, goofiest, funniest dude I have ever come across.
“Only 21 years old, you had so much more to give to the world, you had a full life to live.
“You deserved so much better from this cruel world. The hurt from losing a sibling is a hurt I would never wish upon anyone, this is a nightmare I’ll never wake up from.”
Mr Deng allegedly fled the scene after Monday’s deadly altercation.
Police believe the parties involved in the incident were known to each other.
