Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after a man was found dead in South Melbourne on Friday night.

The man was found with multiple wounds by a passer-by outside housing commission apartments on Dorcas St about 9.30pm.

Paramedics attempted to revive him but he was unable to be saved.

One resident of the apartments revealed he heard shouting outside the building before emergency services arrived shortly before 10pm last night.

“I heard all the commotion but that’s common around here, you hear it every night,” he told the Sunday Herald Sun.

“It was when I heard the sirens I realised it was something bad. I looked out from my balcony and I could see the ambulance and police.

“I haven’t seen the guy before so I don’t think he lived in the building. The poor guy was left lying outside until 5am when the coroner took him away.”

The resident told of how antisocial behaviour is common around the building.

“It’s terrible that this has happened but it’s not usual,” he said. “Crime happens all the time around here. It’s very sad.”

Another resident said she noticed a group of about eight men gathered outside the apartments shortly before the man was discovered dead.

“I remember seeing them all hanging around in group from my balcony,” she said.

“Then a little while later I heard the ambulance and police arrive. It’s terrible.”

She said she was afraid to leave her apartment at night due to high crime rates in the area.

“They do a lot of drugs around this area and in the building.

“From 6pm, I don’t go out — I don’t want to end up stabbed. I live on my own and I keep to myself. I’m careful about who I spend time with around here.”

Victoria Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated.

Police this morning opened up the crime scene in front of the building, where blood was visible on the wooden edging at the forecourt.
