Troublesome conman Edwin “Eddie” Lewis was viciously stabbed multiple times in a frenzied lunchtime attack on Tuesday at Port Phillip Prison.
He was taken from the maximum security prison to a secure unit at St Vincent’s hospital in a serious condition for his upper body injuries.
The Herald Sun understands he was stabbed at least five times by another prisoner but the motive remains unclear.
Lewis is serving 26 years for murdering the wealthy parents of his then girlfriend Amanda Higgins and is due for parole in 2021.
He killed Paul and Carmel Higgins in their Forrest Hill home on April 21, 1995.
Lewis hatched a plot to steal the couple’s Porsche 911 worth $180,000 on their 25th wedding anniversary.
He armed himself with a knife and stabbed Mr Higgins in the back.
Mr Higgins fell to the ground and Lewis rolled him over and stabbed him several more times. He then stabbed Mrs Higgins to death when she returned home.
Lewis buried the couple next to the swimming pool in their backyard then stole money, a credit card and the $180,000 Porsche, and drove north. He was arrested at the Hi-Ho Motel in Broadbeach, on the Gold Coast, six days later.
During several trials, Lewis attempted to blame the couple’s daughter Amanda for the gruesome murders.
The New Zealand-born murderer will be deported across the ditch if he is granted parole.
It is the second stabbing at the Truganina prison in two days, with another prisoner being slashed in the face on Wednesday.
