Mongols bikie Shane Bowden has been wounded in a drive-by shooting just 15 days after walking out of prison.

The 47-year-old was ambushed on Wednesday night at Epping, in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, and later treated in hospital.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a 47-year-old man was standing in the driveway of a Young St property talking to two other men about 7.45pm on Wednesday.

It is believed shots were from a vehicle, hitting Bowden in the lower body.

The vehicle drove away before Bowden was treated at the scene by ambulance officers.

He was taken to hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

The shooting is now the subject of an investigation by the Echo taskforce, which examines outlaw motorcycle gang activity.

“Detectives from the Echo Taskforce are investigating as the victim has links to the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang,” a spokeswoman said.

“At this stage, detectives are still working to determine the motive for the shooting and who is responsible.”

Police want to hear from anyone who was in the Young St area last night and who may have witnessed the shooting, or has CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

Bowden is a close mate of senior Mongol figure Toby Mitchell, himself a two-time shooting victim.

The Herald Sun revealed on June 19 that Bowden had been freed from Loddon Prison, near Castlemaine.

He was met by a limousine and a convoy of other Mongol mates on bikes for the trip back to Melbourne.

Bowden was locked up in 2015 over a vicious home invasion in South Yarra.

He was armed with a knife and dressed in camouflage gear and night-vision goggles when he kicked his victim in the head and stomped on his face.

While behind bars, raunchy photos of a prison guard were found inside his cell at Port Phillip Prison.

The guard was suspended over the scandal amid a Corrections Victoria corruption probe.

In 2006 Bowden, then a Finks bikie, shot CBD killer Christopher Wayne Hudson in a bikie brawl at a Queensland kick-boxing competition.

He has spent the majority of the past two decades behind bars in Victoria and Queensland.
